Steps to Buying an Air Conditioner
Posted: Jun 10, 2020

You've finally decided you need a home cooling system. Now what?

When the temperatures rise and you no longer feel the cool relief from opening a window or the week of sleepless nights have pushed you to your breaking point, you may want to start considering purchasing an air conditioner for your home.

When purchasing a big-ticket item like a new air conditioner or central air system, there are a few things to consider to make sure you are investing in the proper equipment for your needs. With the help of our trusted professionals, we have outlined some basic steps you should take when shopping for a new home comfort system to ensure you are satisfied with your purchase when the day is done.

1. Prepare yourself

First and foremost, evaluate your current home comfort situation. Find out what you like and what you don’t like. Make a list of improvements you are looking to make by installing an air conditioner or home comfort system. In this stage of preparation, you are going to want to consider the following:

  • Placement (Ductless or Central Air)
  • Humidity levels
  • Noise tolerance
  • Air Quality
  • Zones/Sizing

2. Start Researching

Once you’ve established a general idea of what you’re looking for in a system, spend some time gathering information of different products, solutions and brands. You can search online or ask a friend, family member or co-worker their suggestions. In this stage, you are going to decide what TYPE and ROUTE you’d like to take. For example:

  • Are you operating on gas, oil or electric?
  • Do you currently have a furnace, air conditioner, heat pump, boiler, etc.?
  • Are you looking for a Ductless unit or Central Air system?

3. Shop

Now this is when the fun starts, right? As I said earlier, an air conditioner is a large investment, so you want to make sure you are making the right choice. Find a local dealer of the brand you have selected or prefer and speak with a sales representative about what you’re looking for in a system. In this stage you’re going to want to consider budget, warranty and any rebates or trade-in options you could be eligible for. If there’s one piece of advice we want to share, it’s to not focus on price alone. Make sure the contractor is considering the proper sizing of equipment for your needs and offers a quality product and thorough installation. This will (hopefully) avoid future breakdowns or services calls outside of regular seasonal maintenance.

4. Purchase

Once you have decided on the air conditioner of your dreams (okay, I understand that may be a little over the top), you can prepare to have the system installed in your home. With the local contractor, select a time that works within your schedule. Try not to plan it the same day as your dinner party, but hey – if you like a little pressure to get the job done, who am I to say?

5. Enjoy

At this point, I would hope your installation process went smoothly. Now you can relax and enjoy the new home comfort your system offers you. Kick your feet up on the couch or invite some friends over just to show off the new unit.
