Convert to Gas or Propane and Save Money
Posted: Oct 29, 2020

Are you looking to save money on your annual heating costs?

Consider converting from electric baseboards to natural gas or propane heat and get the homecomfort you are looking for at the price you can afford.

Converting from electric heat to natural gas or propane has multiple benefits. Some of these include cost-savings, increased efficiency and reduction of your household carbon footprint.

When looking to convert from electric heat to natural gas or propane, there are a few different options that you should consider.

# 1.  Is there a gas line to your house?

  • Yes - If natural gas has already made it to your neighborhood, you’re already half way there. Now you can contact a local Heating Contractor and speak with their representatives on finding the right solution for your home comfort.
  • No - If you do not have natural gas access on your street yet, you will have to contact union gas.

# 2.  Finding the right solution for your home comfort

When switching from electric heat to natural gas or propane you will have a few different options to optimize your home comfort and get the cost savings you are looking for.

Some options to consider:

Full Conversion – this is ideal if you have an unfinished basement or drop ceilings. A full conversion requires ductwork to be installed in the home, so by having an unfinished basement or a drop ceiling, it will provide you extra ease of installation. If you’re looking to complete a full conversion to a gas furnace and central air system, make sure you contact a local HVAC contractor who provides you with a customized conversion option for your home. At S.&T. Group, we believe that every household is different. It is not a one-size-fits-all job. We take the time to consider all the impacts the installation and equipment will have on your home and living spaces.

If a full conversation doesn’t seem to fit the budget or your plans, there are other great alternatives to compensate the costs of electric baseboard heating. Keep reading for other suggested alternatives.

Direct Vent Wall Furnace – Wall furnaces are a great alternative to compensate electric baseboard heating in specific areas of your home. They are designed to provide efficient, direct heating to targeted areas of your home like bedrooms, entertaining spaces or additions. These units are gas powered which will reduce your electric heating costs. They also are space optimizing and require easy installation by a certified HVAC technician.

Fireplace – Fireplaces are a great way to elevate the aesthetic appeal and comfort level of your home. They not only look great, but they can also provide additional heating to key living spaces like bedrooms, entertaining areas or additions. Typically, we would not recommend relying on a fireplace to heat your home instead of baseboard heating; however, they can be a great alternative to compensate for additional heating sources in targeted areas in your home. Choose between gas or electric fireplaces.

Heat Pump – Although not a gas heating option, heat pumps are efficient electrical HVAC systems that can help you reduce the cost of your electrical heating bill. Heat pumps are versatile home comfort systems that can heat or cool your home all year depending on the season and the environment. Find out What a Heat Pump is and How it Works.
